BIM Basics
BIM vs AutoCAD
AutoCAD draws a picture of a building. BIM builds a database that produces pictures. That difference decides how much rework you face.

The core difference
- AutoCAD: independent 2D drawings made of lines, arcs and text.
- BIM: one model of real building objects, from which drawings are extracted.
- In CAD, a change must be repeated in every affected drawing by hand.
- In BIM, the change happens once and propagates to every view and schedule.
Where CAD still fits
- Quick sketches and single details
- Legacy drawing exchange with consultants and authorities
- Site markups and as-built annotation
- Small standalone works where no coordination is needed
Where BIM clearly wins
- Multi-discipline coordination and clash detection
- Quantities and bar bending schedules taken from geometry
- Revision control across a large sheet set
- 3D understanding for clients and site teams
Practical takeaway
Most Indian projects still exchange DWG and PDF. BIM does not remove that — it produces those outputs from a coordinated model, so the drawings you issue actually match each other.
