How to start a BIM career
A practical sequence for civil, architecture and diploma graduates who want BIM work rather than another certificate.

Step 1 — one tool, properly
- Revit first. Interface, project setup, walls, floors, roofs, stairs, families.
- Finish a complete small building, not five half-built ones.
Step 2 — documentation
- Views, view templates, annotation, tags, schedules
- A printed sheet set with a titleblock and revision record
- This is what employers check first, because it is what clients receive.
Step 3 — a second discipline
- Architecture plus structure, or structure plus MEP awareness
- Link the two models and run a clash test yourself
Step 4 — supporting tools
- Navisworks for coordination review
- Enscape for visualization
- Dynamo for automation
- Excel for schedules and data handling
Step 5 — a portfolio that proves work
- One documented building with plans, sections, elevations and schedules
- One structural model with a bar bending schedule
- One clash report showing issues you found and closed
- Two renders and one short walkthrough
- A page explaining the decisions you took and why
